I know I have heard this piece before but it is really just awesome! Mixing aside I think it is perfect. Keep it up, you are going places!

ha, thank you for the comment! Though, I have no expectations in terms of where music will lead me in this life. I appreciate it.

Nice job, I dig the beat at 1:40. Vibes!

Spadezer responds:

Thanks

Very cool. I also liked the chords. What is going on at 1:27 that part sounded really interesting to me. Sounds almost like a C minor over a C major? I felt like the string/Synth came in a bit abruptly, but I feel like you probably did this on propose. The build at the end is perfect.

Triplets over 8th notes :) You sustained the rhythm throughout the whole piece but it did not get boring because there was enough variation, I think. I also think that breaking the notes into groups on two broke up the the rhythm. Good job.

Phonometrologist responds:

At 1:27, it's quite simplistic, really: It's just a F minor chord with two nonchord tones going to an A-flat Major chord. It starts with an A-flat note of F Minor in octaves via the right-hand. Then the passing tones is B-flat as it lands on a C note during the A-flat Major chord. The other nonchord tone happens with the left-hand during F minor, and it is an E neighboring tone.
In regards to the abrupt string/synth patch, with piano, I think it was only going to be inevitable when something else gets introduced that it might sound a bit abrupt. The triplets over 8th notes obviously was Philip Glass inspired. Thank you for leaving yet another fun review.

I love the atmosphere you start to create at 1:40ish after the first climax, that builds into the descending passages. The build at the end is really cool, it sustains for long enough to get me on edge and then just a bit longer :). I am slightly surprised that it did not get muddy with everything going. The mix is certainly crisp and clean. Also the level of realism is surprising i think if you had mixed this with the intention on it sounding it a real string Orchestra, you could have fooled me.

Really superb job putting this together, I can not image how hard it must have been to stay away from any type of harmony for an almost 5 min piece. Oh, I have to mention that this makes me think of the Dead Space score. I think this piece would make Jason Graves happy :)

When I sent you that message about reverb mixes, I had this piece in mind that I was referencing to. I did attempt to create this as if it was a live recording. As a template, I created 10 different channels representing the string sections of "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima," using the solo strings, and then I added several more channels for the library that had the whole orchestra. Having the solo strings library from 8Dio while using the whole string section from Cage really helped get a more realistic sound. I also looked at the score to see when what string sections (violins 1-4, violas 6-10, etc.) would come in in relation to the other parts of the orchestra. Very meticulous approach, but I really referenced the hell out of "Threnody..." from the musical structure to the actual sound of a live recording.

Oh I really like this! I feel like "Bach" is a really big style to tackle :) The beginning reminds me a minuet, except for the 5/4 part, but when the strings come in it starts to sound more like one of Bach's Preludes with the two going different parts. I really don't know much about Bach's style so I could be way off.
The composition is excellent, I am sure your counterpoint is spot on, and it melodically flows well. I really wish I could hears this piece played by a chamber orchestra complete with harpsichord! That is really the only thing I would change about this is with all the complex string lines you can really tell that they are samples and with this style I really want to hear the real thing. I know you cant change that but it would be fun to do in the future. Great Job!

Phonometrologist responds:

Yeah I ran out of time really to get the arrangement that I wanted completely with all the different parts. Spent a little bit too much time on the composition side of it. But either way, I enjoy this writing style from time to time, but I know not everyone likes Baroque music. Thanks for listening and your comments. I'm going to contemplate on this one.

Really awesome song! And I got to say that you simply nailed the mix. The bass and kick are really working well. The chorus stabs are very tasty and well done and I love the work with the snare!

Lockyn responds:

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed the track man, really appreciate the kind words. Cheers. (This doesn't get you brownie points though ;D)

Really great work here! I also have to ask if that piano is real? Because of all the noise that seems to accompany the piano. If it is real, how did you get that dramatic stereo effect? With two different takes? It sounds really awesome I love the how the two pianos are interwoven with each other.

This really reminds me of something that Olafur Arnalds would do. At least that specific piano sound, the dull noisy texture. The stings and atmosphere are absolutely perfect accompaniment to the swirling piano and guitar plucks. Job Well done.

Phonometrologist responds:

Thank you Omega! You know, I was just thinking about ya and wanting to check up on what you've been doing lately.
The piano is real, i.e., my own, and I played this on one take. I used two mics on either ends of the piano. Though, they weren't a stereo pair as it was whatever mics I could get my hands on.
I had to look up Olafur Arnalds. Thank you for another artist to go to in regards to piano music.
Thank you for your time in listening and writing a review :)

Five Stars! This piece is a very good cover and I think it is your best mix yet. The bass sound you got is just spot on. I love how it builds and decays with the strings. The Arp is great as well, really good sound, I love how things are added and taken away from the arp sound to create interest. Everything fits together very nicely.

Phonometrologist responds:

Well thank you mate! If this is my best mix yet, then I'm looking to spend lots of time investing in pieces for me to achieve similar results...kind of frightening because it took me forever to be happy with it.

This is really cool. Flows really nice and and all the sounds fit really well. I have to say that my favorite part is the kick drum thing. It adds just the perfect amount of percussion without overdoing.

Chemiqals responds:

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm a fan of that kick as well =P

Very good melody! The piano in the beginning is just perfect and then when paired with the trumpets at the end it just makes the song. Great job

anthonyragus responds:

Thanks man!
